GEITA: THE Fire and Rescue Force (FRF) in Geita Region has launched a special programme aimed at strengthening safety in workplaces by broadening protective measures against disasters.
This initiative is supported by the Geita Gold Mine Company (GGML) through its Emergency Response Team (ERT) and is being implemented in public schools and offices.
Assistant Superintendent of the FRF in Geita, Mr Edward Lukuba, presented the programme recently while addressing journalists in Geita Town Council.
Mr Lukuba noted that the first phase of the programme focuses on public schools and offices in Geita Town Council.
Launched on July 15, 2024, the programme has, by August 2024, provided theoretical and practical training to a total of 15 schools, including approximately 15,091 students and 529 teachers.
“GGML has significantly contributed to this effort through their safety policy, which motivates us to continue promoting safety for both life and property,” Mr Lukuba emphasized.
He further explained that the programme aims to reach all community groups to provide safety measures and disaster control, particularly concerning fire accidents.

Ms Linda Malandu, an officer from the Department of Secondary Education in Geita Town Council, acknowledged that the programme has equipped students with essential knowledge on protection and safety measures in their dormitories and classrooms.
“We have been trained on how to properly check fire extinguishers in our offices and homes, as sometimes we unknowingly use expired extinguishers,” Ms Linda said.
Mr Mussa Zuberi, a representative of the Geita Town Council Director, stated that the collaboration between the FRF and GGML will enhance the protection of public assets and ensure safe workplaces across various institutions in the district.
