GEITA: THE Geita Town Council is in the trial stages to promote the use of coal for cooking in all the schools located in the centre of Geita town in order to curb cutting of trees for marking charcoal and firewood.
The Secondary Education Officer of the Geita town council, Mr Rashid Juma, presented the programme during the form four students graduation at the Royal family secondary school located in Geita.
He said the aim is to achieve the goal of ensuring that all schools in Geita use clean and safe energy for cooking, including coal and gas, as boarding schools are among the institutions with the high cooking energy demand.
“It is an instruction from the President’s office that all institutions that feed many people should use clean energy to protect the environment and we have already spoken to the principals of the schools,” Mr Juma stated.

Adding: “There is a positive response to the schools in Geita town, as there are some of our schools that have already started using gas and we are in the process of using coal with the help of the GGML mine. So far three schools are in trial.”
“So when these schools complete the trial phase successfully, we will then direct all schools to adopt,” said Mr Juma.
Director of Royal Family Schools, Eng Lazaro Philipo said the school is among the stakeholders who support national agendas including the use of clean energy and curriculum changes.
He said this action has enabled a good learning environment for students and removed the challenges that may be caused by the lack of good food and a bad learning environment.
