KAGERA: YOUNG Africans Coach, Miguel Gamondi, has emphasised the need for improved scoring efficiency to fully capitalise on the opportunities created by the team in matches.
He was speaking at Kaitaba Ground in Kagera after their match against Kagera Sugar on Thursday, following his charges 2-0 win in their Mainland Premier League opener.
Against a resolute side, two goals from Maxi Nzengeli and substitute Clement Mzize were sufficient to give the visitors a pleasant victory away from home.
“I am happy with the victory. In the first half, we played good football and created six, seven or eight scoring opportunities but scored only one goal.
In the second half, we did not play so well and created just three scoring chances whereby we scored only one goal.
“It is ok; we have gained three points, but we have to improve on scoring efficiency in order to maintain the positive progress in the league,” Gamondi said.
Commenting on their upcoming CAF Champions League match against CBE of Ethiopia, Gamondi noted that preparations will be challenging due to the fact that his 14 players are away on national teams’ duty.
“Most of my players will be back with three days to go for the game but it is a very important match.
We do not know much about CBE, but we have to go there with great determination to make good results and finish the game here.
“It is not good for CAF to organise a FIFA break followed by CAF inter-club competitions, because players travel a lot with their national teams and this is not only affecting us; many clubs like Mamelodi Sundowns have also contributed a lot of players for national teams,” he noted.
On his part, Kagera Sugar trainer, Paul Nkata, conceded the defeat saying they played against a strong team as most of their players feature in national teams.
“Despite the defeat, we still played well; we were a hard nut to crack. We were able to contain them, though in the end we lost the game.

“At least, I now have a clear understanding of my team, basing on the two matches we have played, and without doubt in our next games we are going to be much better,” said the Ugandan trainer.
It was the second back-to-back home defeat for Kagera Sugar in the unfolding league campaign, after succumbing to a 1-0 upset from Singida Black Stars in their first match at the same venue.
