DAR ES SALAAM: TAUSI Likokola, a former international model and book author, has urged Tanzania to emulate the practices of developed countries to produce top models.
In an interview with ‘Sunday News’, Likokola highlighted that while beauty contests can provide a pathway into fashion, the criteria for success vary significantly. She noted that some models succeed due to meeting specific criteria, while others fail due to a lack of it.
Likokola emphasised the importance of parental involvement in a model’s career. “For girls aspiring to enter the fashion industry, it is crucial that they continue their education and have their parents help them connect with industry professionals and build a strong portfolio,” she advised.
Reflecting on her own experiences, Likokola observed that many aspiring models face challenges in achieving success. She pointed out that in developed countries, the fashion industry operates as a well-organised employment system with agencies that manage models, coordinate advertising, exhibitions and ensure fair compensation.

“The fashion industry abroad is highly structured, with agencies working together for advertisements and exhibitions, providing a stable and respected career path,” Likokola added.
