Five perish in truck-tricycle collision

TUNDUMA: Five people lost their lives in a tragic road accident on Friday night at Mpemba Township, Tunduma, in Songwe Region.

The Songwe Regional Police Commander, Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Augustino Senga, said the incident occurred at 9:15 PM when a three-wheeler motorcycle, registration number MC 783 DUF (TVS model), collided head-on with a Scania truck, registration number T.958 BCS.

According to Commander Senga, the tricycle rider, identified as Emmanuel Kalinga, a resident of Muungano in Tunduma, recklessly attempted to overtake other vehicles, leading to the collision.

The other deceased were identified as Rehema Skamnanga (25), a resident of Msongwa; Festo Aron Mambwe (57); and Siyantemi (36).

“The bodies of the deceased have been preserved at the Tunduma Health Centre in Momba District. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident, and police are currently searching for the Scania truck driver, who fled the scene,” Commander Senga said.

He urged drivers to exercise caution and strictly adhere to road safety regulations to prevent similar tragedies and save innocent lives.
