Farmers urged to increase fertilizer input to heighten the agro-economy

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIAN farmers have been directed to appropriately use fertilizers since they stand as key players in the country’s healthier agro-economy.
The country’s agro-economy goal is supported by statistics that show it has facilitated the creation of eight million formal and informal jobs across the country over the past five years.
However, to build an inclusive and interconnected economy, it is important to understand that 75 to 80 percent of the population relies on farming as the main economic activity.
In efforts to support this large group of farmers, the government has increased fertilizer usage in agriculture.
Four to five years ago, annual fertilizer consumption was about 580,000 tonnes, but it has now risen to approximately 1.112 million tonnes per year. This indicates significant efforts to boost agricultural productivity.
Ali Hapi, Secretary General of the CCM Parents’ Wing, emphasized that fertilizer use is a key indicator of the health of the agricultural economy.
“Our country still has low fertilizer consumption compared to its potential, so we need to improve further to ensure farmers achieve better harvests and that our economy grows robustly,” he said.
These government initiatives continue to strengthen the agricultural sector, increase employment, and help improve the livelihoods of many farmers across the nation.
