Faith leaders call on Tanzanians to safeguard peace ahead of polls

DAR ES SALAAM: FAITH leaders have emphasised the vital importance of maintaining peace in Tanzania before, during and after the upcoming General Election, describing it as a cornerstone for sustainable socioeconomic development.

The call was made in Dar es Salaam yesterday during the opening of the mid-year review meeting of the Tanzania Association for Reconciliation and Peace (JMAT), a multi-faith organisation dedicated to promoting national harmony and mutual understanding.

Speaking at the event, Sheikh Twalib Ahmad reminded attendees that peace is not only the foundation of development on earth but also a pathway to eternal reward in the afterlife.

“Tanzania is richly blessed with peace — this is a precious treasure that we must all protect and cherish,” he said.

“Let us take pride in our country, which is globally recognised as a beacon of peace and solidarity.” Sheikh Ahmad, who has visited more than 25 countries, noted that Tanzania stands out as the most peaceful nation among them, adding that it is the responsibility of every citizen to safeguard this status, especially during the electoral season.

Echoing the sentiment, JMAT’s Dar es Salaam Regional Chairperson, Pastor Christosiler Kalata urged members to put God first in the country’s journey toward social and economic progress.

“Things fall apart when we allow evil thoughts and divisive actions to dominate our minds,” he said.

“JMAT exists to unite all people regardless of religious affiliation.”

Pastor Kalata also cautioned against the use of hate speech, which he said can incite violence and undermine national unity.

With the elections approaching, he called on all Tanzanians to pray for continued peace and harmony.

Gracing the event, Temeke Municipal Council Executive Director, Mr Jomaary Satura, reaffirmed the government’s commitment under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, to preserving peace and security, while advancing development for all citizens.

He commended JMAT for complementing the government’s efforts in peacebuilding and pledged continued collaboration to achieve shared goals.

“Peace is a prerequisite for development and any attempt to disrupt it undermines all our progress,” Mr Satura stated.

He further urged public servants to uphold the values of integrity and hard work as essential tools in strengthening national unity and building a happier, more prosperous Tanzania.
