Ethiopian PM Abiy to visit Dar

DODOMA: PRIME Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali, is expected to arrive in the country for a three-day state visit from tomorrow. His visit comes from a special invitation from President Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Speaking about the visit yesterday, yesterday the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, January Makamba said Dr Abiy will be officially received at the State House in Dar es Salaam on March 1, 2024, by his host, President Samia.

He said that the purpose of the visit is to strengthen diplomatic relations and enhance economic cooperation between the two countries.

The minister said the collaboration between the two countries extends across areas such as trade and investment, education, culture, aviation, agriculture, livestock, control of illegal immigration and defence and security.

“Tanzania and Ethiopia share a long and historical diplomatic relationship initiated by the Founding Father, Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, and the Ethiopian Ruler, the late Emperor Haile Selassie,” he said.

He said that the two leaders collaborated closely during the liberation movements in Africa and were among the 32 Founding Leaders of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963.

Minister Makamba further said in addition to diplomatic ties, Tanzania and Ethiopia collaborate in the aviation sector.

He said that between 2016 and 2023, a total of 75 pilots and 25 engineers from Tanzania received training at various levels in Ethiopia.

“This visit is expected to foster more collaboration between Ethiopian Airlines and the Tanzanian national carrier – ATCL – in their commercial operations,” added the minister.

Similarly, he said the two nations cooperate in the livestock and agriculture sector, being leaders in the continent with a significant number of livestock and substantial production of crops such as coffee, tea, honey, vegetables and fruits.

Through this visit, Makamba said both countries aim to strengthen cooperation in irrigation, technology application in agriculture, use of quality seeds and reliable harvests, as well as research in these two sectors.

“Regarding the energy sector, this visit will enable Tanzania and Ethiopia to build capacity and exchange experiences in electricity generation to meet the countries’ needs and produce commercial electricity for Tanzania to sell to other nations through its membership in the East African Power Pool,” he said.

In the field of education, Minister Makamba said that the visit will facilitate the exchange of students and capacity building in curriculum development, with Tanzania having the opportunity to teach Swahili in Ethiopia.

Prime Minister Abiy and his delegation will leave the country to return to Ethiopia on March 2, 2024.
