Endorses Prof Janabi for WHO post

DAR ES SALAAM: PRESIDENT Dr Samia Suluhu Hassan officially endorsed Professor Mohamed Janabi as a candidate for the position of Regional Director for the World Health Organisation (WHO) Africa Region, stating that he would champion Africa’s collective interests and aspirations within the organisation.
In a televised statement released by the Directorate of Presidential Communications on X (formerly Twitter) to mark World Health Day, President Samia said Prof Janabi embodies innovative leadership and brings with him a wealth of experience as a seasoned public health specialist.
“Professor Janabi’s unwavering commitment to public and global health diplomacy and his relentless dedication to improving healthcare systems, aligns perfectly with the vision and objectives of WHO-Afro. His leadership would undoubtedly benefit Africa,” she stated.
She further stressed that Prof Janabi is a credible and capable candidate for the WHO-Afro Regional Director post for the 2025– 2030 term, especially at a time when the region and the world face multiple health challenges, including pandemics and the need for sustainable healthcare financing.

“These are issues that require our collective effort to address,” she added.
Prof Janabi currently serves as the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital (MNH) and also advises President Samia on key health policy matters, including primary healthcare development and direct financing to health facilities.
President Samia highlighted that throughout his career, Prof Janabi has demonstrated strong professional competencies and innovative leadership, which position him to enhance the WHO’s effectiveness across the African region.
“I firmly believe that, if elected, Professor Janabi will significantly contribute to WHO’s mission of improving health outcomes and the wellbeing of people across Africa and beyond,” she said.
In her closing remarks, President Samia called upon WHO African member states to support Prof Janabi’s candidacy and back Tanzania’s bid.
“Together, we can make a difference for the people of Africa. Together, we can build a healthier, more resilient and prosperous continent. Together, we can overcome the odds—because together, we are stronger,” she affirmed.
