DSE, UDSM to deepen capital markets ties

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Dar es Salaam Stock Exchange (DSE) yesterday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the University of Dar es Salaam Business School (UDBS), aimed at strengthening collaboration in the development of capital markets.
The partnership establishes a structured and sustainable framework for cooperation, including the provision of hands-on training opportunities at the stock exchange and joint research on key capital market issues.
DSE’s Chief Legal Counsel, Ms Mary Mniwasa said the initiative marks an important milestone in advancing efforts to promote and deepen understanding of capital markets.
“We have been collaborating in various areas, particularly with stock exchange professionals contributing to university teaching, while also hosting students who require data for research. We saw the need to formalise this cooperation to create a more sustainable foundation,” she said.
The three-year agreement formalises a long-standing relationship between the two institutions.
Under this arrangement, market experts will continue supporting academic instruction, while students will engage more closely with the exchange for data access and research purposes.
More than 2,500 students are expected to benefit from the agreement.
Ms Mniwasa added that strengthening such partnerships is essential in nurturing a new generation of professionals who understand the dynamics of capital markets and can contribute effectively to the country’s economic growth.
The UDBS’s Dean, Prof Omari Mbura said the agreement will focus on three key areas including research, financial education and community outreach, with the goal of expanding access to financial literacy across the country.

“Research fundamentally depends on access to data, much of which is available here. This agreement creates a strong pathway for both the university and DSE to achieve their shared goal of delivering financial education to the public,” said Prof Mbura.
Meanwhile, the Business School’s Head of the Finance Department, Dr Tobias Swai said the collaboration will motivate students to engage more deeply in capital markets research, as they will gain practical exposure to the market rather than relying solely on theoretical knowledge.
By engaging directly with market activities, students are expected to develop deeper analytical skills, enhance research capabilities, and gain insights into real-world investment dynamics, better preparing them for careers in finance and investment man
