Dr Mwinyi pledges to upgrade Pemba Port infrastructure

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR’S Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Presidential candidate, Dr Hussein Ali Mwinyi, has pledged to continue improving the infrastructure of Shumba Port in Pemba Island to help reduce the cost of living and food prices for the isle’s citizens.

He pledged on Monday when addressing groups of entrepreneurs, widows, food vendors, bodaboda riders, and CCM members at Nsuka Grounds in Konde Constituency, North Pemba Region, stressing that the move will solve the long-time challenge of the high cost of living in the area.

Elaborating, he said that the upgrading of the port will enhance the efficiency of cargo and goods handling from the Mainland and abroad, significantly helping to reduce food costs on the island.

Moreover, he said that the construction of a new port is part of the government’s broader strategy to lower transportation costs for essential goods.

He further revealed the government’s plan of building special food storage warehouses that will allow Zanzibarians to purchase food in bulk and at lower prices during harvest seasons on the Mainland, and store it for long-term use.
