Dr Gwajima orders MCs,DJs to register to BASATA before Dec 31 deadline

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Dorothy Gwajima, has commended the National Arts Council of Tanzania (BASATA) for directing masters of ceremonies (MCs), entertainment and event hosts, and disc jockeys (DJs) to register in order to obtain permits to conduct their activities.

Gwajima made the remarks following BASATA’s directive, saying that compliance with the order would help improve the quality of services provided and contribute to community development.

According to a statement issued by BASATA, practitioners in these fields are required to complete the registration process by January 31, 2026. Failure to do so will result in strict legal action being taken against them.

“The National Arts Council, through Regulation 18, Subsection (1) (a) and (b), is the chief registrar and issuer of all permits for carrying out artistic work, and for issuing permits to companies and stakeholders who use artistic works,” the statement said.

“Regulation 20 of the National Arts Council Regulations of 2018, read together with the Second Schedule of BASATA Fees and Charges for 2025, requires masters of ceremonies (MCs) and disc jockeys (DJs) to obtain permits from BASATA in order to carry out their professional activities. The registration fee is 10,000/-, while the permit fee is 40,000/-.” the statement added.
