Dr Gwajima condemns the killing of newborn babies

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Minister for Community Development, Gender, Women, and Special Groups, Dr Dorothy Gwajima, has strongly condemned the habits of some women who abandon or kill newborn babies, saying that the government will not hesitate to take stern action against anyone committing such actions.
The minister made the statement through her social media platforms today, October 23, 2025, describing such acts as extreme cruelty and a sin against God.
She said that it is important for women to take precautions before engaging in sexual activities that could lead to pregnancy if they are not ready to raise a child.
The minister also asked citizens to cooperate with the police whenever they come across information about acts of violence or killings of infants, saying the government will not hesitate to take stern action against anyone found involved.
Elaborating, Dr Gwajima said that the Ministry continues to provide social welfare services in various parts of the country and urged women facing challenges or family problems to report to those offices instead of taking cruel actions against innocent children.
“Abandoning a newborn baby is a cruelty at the highest level. Many people cannot have children and are seeking legal ways to adopt,“ she said.

Moreover, the Minister called on men to take responsibility in relationships, stressing that the outcomes of romantic relationships should be jointly safeguarded, and that cruel acts against children concern both men and women under the law as well as moral principles.
“Children should be cared for and protected; every child is of great value and an integral part of the nation’s future,” she said.
