Dodoma steps up tree planting to boost environmental sustainability

DODOMA: RESIDENTS of Dodoma Region have been urged to plant more trees and ensure proper care to promote environmental sustainability and make the region greener.
Regional Commissioner Rosemary Senyamule made the call during the launch of the Tree Planting Campaign in Chamwino and Mpwapwa districts, following the official regional launch held on December 30 last year at Dodoma City Hospital.
Launching the campaign for Chamwino District at Igandu Secondary School, Ms Senyamule called on every household to plant trees, saying the government has produced enough seedlings for distribution.
“We have officially started the tree-planting season in Dodoma Region. After launching in Dodoma City, we are now rolling out the campaign in Chamwino and directing residents to plant trees at household level,” she said.
She said the government, through the Tanzania Forest Services (TFS), has raised one million seedlings to be distributed free of charge, urging district directors to ensure each household plants at least five trees.
Environmental officers have been tasked with supervising the exercise to ensure seedlings are well maintained.

Under the National Environment Management Plan, Dodoma Region is expected to plant eight million trees this year, requiring each resident to plant at least three trees.
Residents of Igandu Ward welcomed the initiative, saying it will help prevent soil erosion, provide shade and fruits and generate economic benefits.
The RC later launched a similar exercise at Gulwe Primary School in Mpwapwa District, again urging residents to plant trees in large numbers to conserve and protect the environment.
