Dodoma abattoir revenues hit 821.4m/- in months

DODOMA: REVENUES at the Dodoma Abattoir have surged by 184.2m/-, reaching a total of 821.4m/- in just nine months, thanks to improved infrastructure and enhanced slaughtering services at the facility.
Minister for Livestock and Fisheries, Dr Ashatu Kijaji revealed the figures during her recent budget speech in Dodoma, highlighting broader efforts by the National Ranching Company (NARCO) to strengthen the livestock sector.
The improvements have also attracted private meat exporters seeking efficiency and quality.
“The ministry, through NARCO, continues to strengthen the livestock sector,” said Dr Kijaji. “NARCO has signed agreements with two companies –Tanzania Game and Livestock Breeders Ltd and Tan Choice Ltd, to breed superior livestock at the West Kilimanjaro and Kongwa ranches, respectively.”
She added that NARCO is finalising additional agreements with three strategic companies — Union Meat Co Ltd, Kahama Fresh and Liam Ranch Ltd, aimed at producing high-quality livestock and livestock products for both domestic and international markets.
For the 2024/2025 financial year, Dr Kijaji said that NARCO had produced 2,312 calves, representing 56.6 per cent of the annual target of 4,080 and distributed 415 heifers to livestock keepers, equivalent to 83 per cent of the target of 500.
In the same period, NARCO produced and sold 232.6 tonnes of meat, achieving 77.5 per cent of the 300-tonne annual target and fattened and slaughtered 2,326 cattle, reaching 93 per cent of the target of 2,500.

The minister also noted the role of the Tanzania Meat Board (TMB) in overseeing and developing the meat industry.
By April 2025, more than 10,000 stakeholders involved in the meat value chain had been inspected to ensure quality and safety of products reaching the market.
“These inspections guarantee that meat and its byproducts are safe for consumption and meet national and international standards,” said Dr Kijaji.
“They were carried out across all regions of the country.” To further enhance quality and public health, the Meat Board conducted training for 11,488 meat processors and sellers during the 2024/25 financial year.
The training, held in 18 regions, focused on meat safety, value addition and public health protection.
Regions where these sessions took place included: Dodoma, Morogoro, Iringa, Tabora, Shinyanga, Kigoma, Mwanza, Kagera, Mara, Dar es Salaam, Coast, Mtwara, Mbeya, Ruvuma, Songwe, Arusha, Kilimanjaro and Tanga.
