Crime drops, road accidents surge in isles

ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Police Force has reported a decline in criminal cases during the first half of 2025, with 1,195 cases recorded between January and June, compared to 1,652 cases during the same period in 2024.

Presenting the security assessment report at Police Headquarters at Kilimani, Commissioner of Police (CP) Kombo Khamis Kombo attributed the drop to ongoing efforts by the police, including public education campaigns through legal forums and media outlets.

He said the efforts have increased community awareness about the impact of crime, with reported incidents now categorised into various types, including 409 cases of personal violence such as murder, rape, and sodomy.

However, the Commissioner revealed a significant increase in traffic offences, with 28,740 road accident cases reported from January to June 2025, compared to 16,870 cases during the same period in 2024.

He said the Police Force has taken several legal measures to address the incidents, including: 317 cases successfully prosecuted in court, 182 cases dismissed, 68 cases dropped at police stations, and 38 cases currently under review by the Director of Public Prosecution’s Office In addition, 21 cases have been referred to the Zanzibar Anti-Drugs Commission, 210 cases are under investigation, and 359 cases are still ongoing in courts at various stages.

CP Kombo called on citizens to continue cooperating with the police to help combat crime and reduce road accidents, especially as the country approaches the general election campaign season later this year.
