TANZANIA: TANZANIA Cricket Faternity mourns the sad demise of the renowned former National Cricket Team Captain, Babu Chohan.
“Chohan, as dearly as we called him, died in Manchester, England on Friday the 28th December at the age of 90,” said Kanu Rathod, a famous Tanzanian cricket legend. Rathod defined Chohan’s sad demise in his message as ‘End of an Era’.
He said the late Chohan represented the Tanzania National Squad from 1959 , on for almost two decades.
“He also represented and captained the East African squad and played for Tanzania and East Africa, along with other stars like R. D. Patel, Late Badru Bhamji, Praful Mehta, Suresh Rawal, Pranlal, Vasant Tapu, Firoz Bhanji and Firoz Goa. “He turned to coaching aspiring national cricketers like Hitesh Patadia, and Taher Amijee amongst other young players.
“Late Chohan who is a former banker played for his team Upanga Sports Club in all FirstClass Local tournaments along with veteran national hockey star Canada-based Tochi Sandhu and cricketer Mehta. “Babu is survived by a widow Nirmala, four children and seven grandchildren,” he said.
England-based Rathod is expected to lead cricket Legends at the funeral ceremony to be announced shortly. In another development, Tanzania Cricket Association (TCA) said Chohan was one of the finest batsmen in Tanzania.
A TCA statement said: “He was a dynamic attacking opening batsman and most experienced Tanzania national team member and the most successful batsman in the first triangular tourney.
“In 1966 was selected in the strongest East African cricket squad to tour Zambia and in 1969 was captained national team against the visiting Rajasthan team of India.”
Many legends have expressed their heartfelt condolences, following Chohan’s death, some of them being Sandhu Kulbir and Singh Gupta who said he will be remembered forever
