Complex surgery camp to treat 20 in Dar

DAR ES SALAAM: TWENTY patients are beneficiaries of a ten-day camp to be conducted by the National Hospital Muhimbili-Mloganzila in Dar es Salaam from February 26 to March 7th this year.

The camp will specialize in Revision arthroplasty for patients seeking knee and hip surgeries.

Revision arthroplasty is complex joint replacement surgery, according to the Acting Deputy Director of Surgical Services, Goodlove Mfuko, who spoke on behalf of the Managing Director of the Muhimbili National Hospital.

He said both knee and hip surgeries will be conducted by Tanzania specialists and an expert in organ transplantation, Dr Tian Hua from China.

Additionally, Dr Mfuko said the ten-day camp also serves as a capacity-building event for the local surgeons from various hospitals nationwide.

He said that will enable that kind of experience in complex surgical services to reach other hospitals in various regions of Tanzania.

He said once the experience is imparted to many surgeons countrywide it will ease people a burden to travel far AWAY to get that kind of surgical service.

“The government has heavily invested in the health sector and that includes the availability of the state-of-the-art medical equipment and well-trained medical staff, therefore it is our responsibility as medical experts to ensure we improve our services that will lure local and foreign patients to be treated in Tanzania,” he said.

According to Dr Mfuko, having many patients from outside treated in Tanzanian hospitals helps the country to gain much from medical tourism.

In retrospect, Dr Mfuko said the choice of the Chinese expert, Dr Tian Hua is based on the findings that grade China as among the countries whose technology in the medical sector is highly advanced.

Other hospitals have been invited to attend the ten-day camp besides the national hospital.

Dr Mfuko named them as Temeke and Tumbi hospitals, Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI), and CCBRT.

The specialist in hip and knee transplantation surgery, Dr Abubakar Hamis said the kind of surgery will be performed to a person whose artificial knee or hip plant is loose or operated on when the technology was less advanced.
