Community radio journalists urged to promote intangible cultural heritage

KATAVI: COMMUNITY radio journalists in Katavi region have been called upon to publicise stories on intangible cultural heritage in the region as doing so will attract investors and thus foster economic opportunities for youth and women.

The call was made in Mpanda on Wednesday by Misunkumilo Division Officer Leah Gawaza while officiating a capacity building workshop to community radio and digital platforms journalists in Katavi Region on behalf of the Mpanda District Commissioner, Jamila Kimaro.

She said the training was timely, adding that investing in youth is investing for the future while investing in women is doing so for the community.

Gawaza paid an accolade to TAMCODE for the move to conduct the activity in Mpanda, adding that the region is normally hard to reach and it was thus encouraging to see institutions come to work in the area.

For his part, Carol Stephen who is Katavi Regional Sports, Cultural and Youth Officer said the capacity building on intangible cultural heritage has come to the region at an opportune time as the media is a pillar to development as one can never go without it.

He reiterated the region’s commitment to support TAMCODE in its activities to support women, youth and the media, adding that Katavi region has a lot of opportunities in need of tapping.

“Tanzania is the only country in the world that still embraces its culture and whoever does so is bound to survive,” said Stephen.

The two-day activity is conducted by the Tanzania Media for Community Development through the UNESCO- Alwaleed Philanthropies project.

The project is meant to empower community radio journalists to use their radio stations and digital platforms to promote intangible cultural heritage to enhance employment opportunities for youth and women in Katavi and Rukwa region.

The session brought together community radio journalists in the Katavi region, digital platforms as well as artists from the University of Dodoma.
