DAR ES SALAAM: The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Welfare and Community Development has commended high standards of workplace safety and health at the Elsewedy Electric factory in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam.

Taking the same stance at the Knauf gypsum factory in Mkuranga, Coastal Region, during a recent visit to the Occupational Safety and Health Authority (OSHA) offices and the two factories, the committee expressed satisfaction with the adherence to safety regulations.

The delegation was led by Ridhiwani Kikwete, Minister for State in the Prime Minister’s Office (Labour, Youth, Employment, and Persons with Disabilities), and included OSHA’s Chief Executive Officer, Khadija Mwenda.

The objective was to assess the enforcement of workplace safety and health laws.

Committee Chairperson Fatma Toufiq praised the factories for setting an example in compliance. “Knauf is among the companies known for strict adherence to safety and health regulations, and we witnessed this firsthand. The committee will continue advising the government on strategies to safeguard the workforce,” she said.

Minister Ridhiwani Kikwete emphasized the government’s commitment to supporting investors, acknowledging their role in economic growth and job creation.

He applauded OSHA’s regular inspections, which have strengthened workplace safety.

“I commend OSHA’s leadership. Each factory we visited had dedicated safety briefing areas to inform visitors of potential hazards and protective measures. Notably, the machinery at these factories is equipped with automatic shutdown features when the perimeter is breached, ensuring worker safety,” he noted.

OSHA Chief Executive Khadija Mwenda urged employers to continue prioritizing safety, highlighting its role in boosting productivity.

“Knauf’s significant investment in safety systems has spurred growth. I encourage all business owners to invest in comprehensive safety measures to protect their workers,” she said.

The government remains dedicated to upholding high safety standards, aligned with the President’s vision of ensuring a secure work environment for all Tanzanians.
