Collapsed wall kills two children in Katavi

KATAVI: TWO children from different primary schools in Tanganyika District, Katavi Region, died on the spot and two others, including a minor, sustained multiple injuries after being struck by a collapsing wall of a demolished house in Ikola village.

The Katavi Regional Police Commander (RPC), Senior Assistant Commissioner of Police (SACP) Ms Kalster Ngonyani, identified the deceased as Devota Ferdinand (7), a pre-primary pupil at Tanganyika ‘B’ Primary School and Japhet Pius (12), a Standard Three pupil at Kafisha Primary School, both located in Ikola village.

The injured individuals were identified as a three-year-old minor, Japhet Ferdinand and 25-year-old Ferdinand Justine, a resident of Subwa – Mchangani in Ikola village.

“The injured persons were taken to a nearby health facility, treated and subsequently discharged,” explained SACP Ngonyani.

The RPC confirmed the incident to the ‘Daily News’ during a phone interview on Wednesday, stating that it occurred on October 5th this year at around 1:00 p.m in Ikola village.

RPC Ngonyani said that residents had been relocated following torrential rains that severely affected the area last year, submerging many houses.

On October 5th, the displaced residents returned to Ikola village to demolish their flood-damaged homes and collect bricks for rebuilding in their new locations.

“While they were demolishing their houses, the children were nearby and suddenly, the falling walls struck them. Two children were reported dead and two others, including a three-year-old, sustained injuries,” added the RPC.
