Clean Cooking Energy marathon draws 700 runners to Dar

DAR ES SALAAM: REGISTRATION is in progress for the highly anticipated Clean Cooking Marathon scheduled at The Green Ground in Oysterbay, Dar es Salaam, this Saturday.

The event has been specifically arranged to complement efforts being made by the government in advocating for the Clean Cooking Energy campaign to all Tanzanians.

In her recent media briefing, Tanzania Business Women Association (TABWA) Executive Director Noreen Mawalla says around 700 people are expected to participate in the race.

“As you know, the current administration under the presidency of Samia Suluhu Hassan is advocating for Clean Cooking Energy, a campaign which is useful in preserving the environment and the health of people.

“On the day, those who will emerge as winners will walk away with different prizes, including clean cooking stoves; hence, people should register in order to be part of this exciting marathon,” she says.

According to her, participants will compete in various races of 21 km, 10 km, 5 km, and 2.1 km, which have been specifically reserved for children.

In June 2023, TABWA conducted the Women in Clean Cooking Conference, which was held at the Superdome Hall Masaki in the city, and with support from ORYX Tanzania, they were able to donate 200 gas stoves to Food Vendors (Mama Lishe) of the Coast  Region.

“One of the resolutions of this Conference was to come up with a long-term strategy that will make the clean cooking awareness and implementation sustainable.

“Within the lines of last year’s Conference resolution, TABWA is organizing Clean Cooking Marathon Project whose purpose is to conduct a campaign to execute Clean Cooking awareness, capacity building and creating clean cooking solutions by distributing Clean Energy Stoves to Food Vendors (Mama Lishe), Chips Vendors and Women in the rural areas,” says Mawalla.

On her part, Mercy Chilumba, founder of Mkombozi Project, highlights that together with the renowned Bongo Flavor star Benard Mnyang’anga (Ben Pol), they have produced a special Clean Cooking Song that will be officially launched during the marathon.

The Clean Cooking Marathon is a series of events that will cover all five zones in mainland Tanzania, and the execution of the project will cover seven regions, including Dar es Salaam, Coast Region, Arusha, Mwanza, Dodoma, Mbeya, and Kilimanjaro.
