CCM urges University Students to avoid informal marriages while studying

IRINGA: UNIVERSITY students have been urged to avoid informal or unregistered marriages and to refrain from joining directionless groups with tendencies that could negatively affect their studies and future lives, particularly students who aspire to serve the nation of Tanzania and beyond.

The call was made by Dr Tumaini Msowoya, a member of the CCM Regional Political Committee for Iringa, while speaking at a ceremony to welcome first-year students at Iringa University.

Dr Msowoya said that although many students are of an age that allows them to make personal decisions, they must remain cautious of behaviors that may mislead them, including entering into informal marriages and associating with unproductive groups, which can ultimately undermine their academic goals and overall life prospects.

He noted that some students are drawn by financial temptations or the desire to live a luxurious lifestyle while at university, a situation that causes them to lose sight of the primary purpose of higher education—studying and building their academic capacity.

“I am aware that you are over 18 years old and therefore no longer a child by legal standards, but is marriage what brought you to university? Do your parents know that you are married or living as a married couple while studying?,” Dr Msowoya questioned.

He added that he had previously conducted research on the lifestyles of university students and found that many live with partners without their families’ knowledge, a situation he described as dangerous and potentially harmful to their studies and future.

Dr Msowoya encouraged students to love their country, be patriotic, study diligently, and avoid groups with negative influences that could hinder their academic, social, and personal development.

At the event, he presented a contribution of 2m/- donated by Dikson Mwipopo, a member of the CCM Regional Political Committee for Iringa, to support and motivate the students in their educational journey.
