MWANZA: THE government has been urged to intensify civic education campaigns, enabling rural voters to assess candidates critically by focusing on integrity, vision and track record over personal ties.
President Samia Suluhu Hassan and other leaders have recently emphasised the importance of all eligible Tanzanians actively participating in the electoral process to elect competent local government leaders, thereby improving the quality of next year’s general election.
The government has designated November 27 of this year as voting day and declared it a public holiday to provide all citizens with the opportunity to cast their votes.
Mwanza-based political analyst, Mr Hamiduni Maliaseli, stressed that enhancing civic education campaigns is essential for empowering rural voters to make informed decisions during elections. He noted that many rural communities lack access to comprehensive information about candidates and the electoral process, often resulting in choices based on personal connections or short-term incentives.
“This will ensure that elected leaders are competent and genuinely committed to addressing community needs,” he stated.
Effective civic education also fosters accountability and strengthens democratic processes.

Furthermore, civic education promotes inclusivity by encouraging active participation from all citizens, particularly marginalised groups in rural areas.
Over time, this builds a culture of responsible leadership and contributes to sustainable development across the country.
“Strengthening the integrity of electoral processes builds public trust and creates a conducive environment for electing leaders who genuinely represent the interests of their communities,” he added.
He underscored that a well-informed electorate is essential for building a stronger democracy in Tanzania.
As civic education campaigns intensify, they will ensure that voters, particularly in rural areas, have the knowledge to elect leaders who can bring about meaningful and lasting change in their communities.
