Brain surgery course benefits Tanzanian hospitals

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIA and 17 other African nations will benefit from brain and skull base training that started today in the Tanzanian commercial capital, Dar es Salaam.
It is a five-day training specializing on vascular neurosurgery and skull base neurosurgery and related fields as both deal with the underside of the brain and the base of the skull.
The training on vascular neurosurgery primarily focuses on treating conditions affecting the blood vessels of the brain, while skull base surgery deals with tumors and other growths located at the base of the skull.
The Director of Medical Services in the Ministry of Health, Hamad Nyembea, said today,y May 19, 2025, during the training’s launch, that neurosurgery experts from Europe will conduct the five-day training.

He said trainees from all referral hospitals and other big hospitals have been enrolled in the training according to Nyembea.
“The neurosurgery training has come at the right time as there are many people facing brain tumour complications at the moment,” he disclosed.
He said there is an increase in brain tumours, cancer and skull base cases in Tanzania, and that forced the government to incur big costs to treat its people outside the country.
He said the training also aims to empower local experts in neurosurgery to properly utilize the medical equipment used in conducting neurosurgeries in their hospitals.
The training will climax on Friday this week.
