Biteko reaffirms commitment to Kigoma region’s development
KIGOMA: DEPUTY Prime Minister and Minister for Energy, Dr Doto Biteko, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing development projects in Kigoma Region, aimed at boosting its economy.
Speaking during a meeting in Kasanda Ward, Kakongo District, on Wednesday, he highlighted ongoing initiatives such as hospital construction and improved road networks that enhance access to essential services for local residents.
“This council was established in 2013 in a bushland area, but after visiting the Kakonko District Hospital, the progress is evident.
The government wants Kigoma to thrive, ensuring that people live peacefully and enjoy their lives here. I am very pleased with the advancements at the district hospital,” stated Dr Biteko.
Before the establishment of Kakonko District Hospital, residents depended on distant facilities in Bugando and Geita, incurring significant costs.
The new hospital aims to alleviate these financial burdens. Dr Biteko also emphasised that under President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the sixth phase government prioritizes citizen welfare.
Plans include the construction of a 48-kilometer road from Kakonko to the Tanzania-Burundi border under the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS).
“We want to eliminate challenges in people’s lives. The Nyakanazi-Kasulu road to Kigoma will be connected at tarmac level. President Samia envisions border trade as an opportunity, not a burden,” he said.
Commending Kakonko’s agricultural output, Dr. Biteko noted the production of 81,000 tonnes of food, exceeding the local demand of 76,000 tonnes, resulting in a surplus of 157,000 tonnes.
Deputy Minister in the President’s Office for Regional Administration and Local Government, Ms Zainabu Katimba, added that over 4 billion shillings has been invested in building facilities and acquiring medical equipment for Kakonko District Hospital.

She encouraged Kakonko residents to register for the electoral roll and participate in the local government elections scheduled for November 27, 2024.
Kakonko Council Chairperson and Gwarama Ward Councillor, Mr Fidelis Nderego, noted that the upcoming tarmac road from Kakonko Market to Burundi would enhance the local economy.
