Beverage firm spices up Zanzibar Forodhani flavours

ZANZIBAR: IN Zanzibar, few places capture the island’s spirit like the Forodhani Night Market.

As evening descends on Stone Town, the waterfront springs to life with the aroma of grilled seafood, the buzz of conversation, and the warm energy ofFa community gathering to enjoy local delicacies.

Now, Coca-Cola is joining the celebration with its Chupa la Machupa campaign — a vibrant tribute to flavour, tradition, and connection that’s adding a refreshing twist to one of Zanzibar’s most iconic culinary hotspots.

Nestled between the House of Wonders and the Old Fort, Forodhani transforms at sunset into a bustling open-air food market.

Locals and tourists flock here to indulge in an irresistible array of dishes — from grilled squid, lobster, and barracuda to street favourites like urojo (Zanzibar mix), samosas, kahawa (spiced coffee), cassava, fried bananas, sweet potatoes, and the famous Zanzibar pizza.

But Forodhani is more than a place to eat — it’s a full sensory experience. Visitors stroll along the seafront, unwind on benches, or perch on the sea wall to soak in breathtaking ocean views amid the local bustle.

Reflecting Zanzibar’s rich cultural crossroads, the market’s cuisine blends Arabic, Mediterranean, and Indian influences.

The dishes — infused with spices like masala, cardamom, garlic, turmeric, and saffron — pair perfectly with an ice-cold Coca-Cola, Sprite, or Fanta in flavours like Orange, Pineapple, and Passion.

Running for two months, the Chupa la Machupa campaign aims to reach more than 100,000 consumers weekly. It not only rewards loyal fans but also supports local vendors by driving sales and boosting community income.

And Forodhani isn’t just about food. One of its most beloved attractions is Makachu — a traditional diving spot that has become a symbol of youthful energy and coastal pride.

Originally called Kachumbe, the name evolved into Kachu, and later Makachu, as the tradition grew in popularity.

In recent years, Makachu has transformed into a form of performance art. Since 2022, divers have added flair to their stunts by holding banners bearing names of celebrities, brands, and clients.

Coca-Cola’s campaign joined in the fun, with Makachu divers leaping into the ocean clutching glass Coke bottles and campaign banners — a thrilling spectacle that wowed onlookers and amplified the brand’s joyful message.

Whether it’s the unforgettable flavours, the cultural richness, or the spirit of the Makachu divers, Forodhani offers a true taste of Zanzibar — now made even more refreshing with a Coke in hand.
