Bashungwa orders IGP to intensify efforts against cybercrime

KILIMANJARO: THE Minister for Home Affairs, Innocent Bashungwa, has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Camillus Wambura, to ensure that the Police Force in collaboration with other security agencies, strengthens online patrol.

Bashungwa made the statement intending to control some criminals who use the internet to disrupt the peace and tranquility of the country, as well as to combat crimes committed through the internet.

He issued the order today, during the inauguration of the new “Class B” Police Station located in Sanya Juu, Siha District, Kilimanjaro Region.

The new station is part of the Government’s efforts to improve the infrastructure of buildings and equipment within the Police Force.

“IGP, currently, some criminals have moved to the internet. Just as you do regular patrols, we should also strengthen online patrols to control financial theft and criminals who aim to disrupt the peace and stability of our country through the internet,” Bashungwa stressed.

In addition, Bashungwa directed the Police Force to continue implementing various directives of the Honorable President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, relating to combating crime, controlling reckless drivers, as well as removing substandard vehicles that cause road accidents.

Bashungwa called on the Police Force to collaborate with the Tanzania Roads Agency (TANROADS) to identify dangerous areas on highways that have been reported to cause accidents frequently, so that they can be subjected to a feasibility study and a budget allocated to find a permanent solution.

In another step, Bashungwa has called on the Police Force to continue collaborating with motorcycle drivers (boda boda) by meeting with their leaders at the district and regional levels to provide them with road safety education and set joint strategies to reduce accidents in the country.

Bashungwa has also instructed all security agencies under the Ministry of Home Affairs to continue collaborating in strengthening peace, security, and stability, especially in the period leading up to the 2025 General Elections and after the elections.

For his part, the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Camillus Wambura, has called on citizens to continue collaborating with the Police Force to maintain peace and stability, while dispelling fears among Tanzanians by assuring them that the country is safe and will continue to be safe.

And the Kilimanjaro Regional Commissioner, Nurdin Babu, has said that the Siha District Police Station has been built with government funds through the Police Force, in collaboration with donations from the residents  of the district.
