Barker seeks squad boost

ZANZIBAR: SIMBA SC Head Coach Steve Barker has admitted his side must strengthen their squad if they are to achieve consistency, following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Azam FC in the Mapinduzi Cup semi-final on Thursday night.
The highly anticipated clash at the New Amaan Complex in Unguja, Zanzibar, ended in disappointment for the Msimbazi Reds. Speaking after the match, Barker offered his assessment of his team’s shortcomings, revealing that reinforcements will be required across several positions.
“It is clear that we need to add strength to the squad, especially in the goalkeeping area, but there are also other positions we have identified that need improvement,” Barker said.
“This is a normal process when you are building a strong and competitive team.” The newly appointed coach confirmed that Simba’s technical bench has already begun a detailed evaluation of the squad as the club looks to regain its best form both domestically and on the continental stage.

Barker added that his immediate priority is to return to training with a full squad, including players who were recently away on national team duty, as preparations begin for Simba’s crucial CAF Champions League encounter against Tunisian giants, Esperance.
“We need to have a complete squad so that our preparations can be effective,” he said.
“The match against Esperance is a big one and it requires thorough planning. Every player must be part of our strategy and fully ready for the challenge.” Despite the semi-final exit, Barker remains confident Simba can respond positively if the necessary adjustments are made in good time. On the other side, Azam FC Head Coach Florent Ibenge praised his players for their discipline and tactical execution against what he described as a formidable opponent.
“This was a big match,” Ibenge said. “Simba are a strong team with quality players. We prepared well, and the players followed the instructions exactly as we agreed.” Azam’s victory underlined their growing confidence ahead of the final, while Simba are left to reflect on lessons learned as they seek to rebuild momentum « for the challenges that lie ahead.
