Akram breaks Amaan hoodoo

  • Becomes first to score at refurbished Amaan Complex

ZANZIBAR: KVZ FC’s Akram Mhina is the first player to score in the refurbished New Amaan Sports Complex.

He earned the feat yesterday after three games on the new pitch in Zanzibar ended goalless. Mhina secured his place in the complex history books after scoring a brace during his team’s 2-0 win over Jamhuri SC in the Mapinduzi Cup Group C match, grabbing three points to lead the group.

Jamhuri fell to the bottom of the group after conceding more goals. As of yet, Young Africans and Jamus have not played in their group.

With a smile, Mhina expressed his excitement at being the first player to score in the complex and offered credit to his teammates for hard work that secured an important group win.

Following his success, Mhina was awarded 1.5m/-; 1m/- for being the first player to bank goals and 500,000/- as player of the match. After the opening of the venue on Wednesday, three games were played before yesterday’s encounter.

The first game was between Kilimanjaro Stars and Zanzibar Heroes. The next two matches, which were Group A matches between five-time Mapinduzi Cup winners Azam and defending champions Mlandege, and Vital’O FC against Chipukizi United in Group B. After the Group A match, Azam Head Coach, Bruno Ferry, highlighted that it had been a tight one against Mlandege and insisted they would treat each match they play as a final for their goal to win the title.

“We still need three points to progress to the next round. Moving on to the next round increases our chances of winning the title. “Despite missing some players due to national team commitments for the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) preparations, I am sure the players we have will deliver what we need and that’s winning the silverware,” Ferry commented.

Regarding his new striker, Franklin Navarro, the trainer refrained from issuing remarks, noting that the player hadn’t yet featured in a match.

However, he expressed confidence in the player’s ability and anticipated his contribution to Azam’s success.
