Airtel Tanzania marks World Youth Skills Day with commitment to digital empowerment

DAR ES SALAAM: Airtel Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering young Tanzanians with digital skills as part of its broader agenda to prepare the next generation for opportunities in the digital economy.

This year’s World Youth Skills Day, commemorated under the theme ‘Youth empowerment through AI and digital skills’, resonates strongly with Airtel’s ongoing efforts to bridge the digital divide and promote inclusive learning through initiatives such as Airtel SMARTWASOMI and Fursa Lab.

Speaking during the commemoration held at Airtel Headquarters in Dar es Salaam, Director of Corporate Communications, Ms Beatrice Singano, said the company’s efforts are aimed at ensuring equitable access to learning platforms and practical technology training for young people across the country.

“Our goal is to ensure that every young Tanzanian has access to tools that can unlock their potential. Through Airtel SMARTWASOMI, we are removing the cost barrier to learning by offering free access to curriculum content, while Fursa Lab gives young people and teachers the opportunity to build practical tech skills that are in demand in the modern workforce,” she said.

Airtel SMARTWASOMI is a collaborative initiative between Airtel Tanzania, the Airtel Africa Foundation, UNICEF, and the Government of Tanzania, providing free access to curriculum-aligned digital learning content developed by the Tanzania Institute of Education (TIE) and Shule Direct.

The platform includes lessons, quizzes and revision tools and is accessible without data charges, making it especially impactful for learners in both urban and rural areas.

Ms Singano further noted that Fursa Lab, a digital innovation hub launched in partnership with the Dar Teknohama Business Incubator (DTBi), has trained thousands of youth and hundreds of educators since its inception.

The centre focuses on key areas such as computer literacy, robotics, mobile app development, digital marketing and 3D design, equipping participants with skills relevant to the modern job market.

“As we celebrate this important day, we are reminded that technology and partnerships are powerful tools in unlocking opportunities for youth. We are truly honoured to work hand in hand with our partners and the government to empower Tanzania’s future digital leaders,” she added.
