Airtel subsea cable to boost digital sector growth

DAR ES SALAAM: AIRTEL Tanzania has reaffirmed its commitment to advancing the country’s digital landscape with the recent activation of the 2Africa subsea cable landing station in Mbezi, Dar es Salaam.

This landmark development is a significant step towards enhancing connectivity and supporting the country’s broader vision for a digital economy.

The 2Africa subsea cable, spanning an impressive 45,000 kilometres, is poised to transform the country’s digital ecosystem.

Airtel Tanzania, Chief Network Engineering Officer Dr Adedoyin Adeola, said on Monday 2Africa will provide critical internet infrastructure to the continent with 1.2 billion people and beyond.

“It places Africa in a better position to be integrated into the global digital economy, inclusive, empowered and developed sustainably for the whole continent.

“[Additionally], it has positioned Tanzania as a technology hub for East Africa and Africa,” Dr Adeola said.

He further said that the 2Africa submarine cable landing station will bridge the digital divide in urban and rural by improving internet accessibility and fostering the growth of online businesses, thereby creating additional revenue streams for the government and bettering individual lives.

The initiative marks a crucial milestone in the country’s journey towards becoming a regional technology hub, empowering communities and fostering innovation in various sectors.

Airtel Tanzania Business Director Mr Joseph Muhere said the telcom is supporting the country’s transition to a digital economy by providing cutting-edge infrastructure, aligning with Tanzania’s broader vision of promoting socioeconomic growth and digital inclusivity.

“The 2Africa submarine cable landing station showcases Airtel’s commitment to impact and uplift the lives of our customers, stakeholders and communities.

This landing station holds the power to attract local and foreign investment, to foster innovation,” he said.
