Airtel Money, AMCOS partner to boost financial inclusion for farmers
MTWARA,: Airtel Money Tanzania has entered into a strategic partnership with Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) to enable farmers, particularly in rural areas, to receive secure payments through mobile money.
The collaboration seeks to ease long-standing challenges faced by smallholder farmers, who often travel long distances to access financial services or handle large sums of cash. With the new system, payments will be made directly to farmers’ phones, ensuring convenience, security and transparency.
Speaking during the launch, Airtel Money Director, Mr Andrew Rugamba, said the initiative is designed to give farmers greater control over their earnings. “This partnership is giving farmers the dignity of financial access. Through Airtel Money, they will have a safe and reliable way to receive their earnings and use them without delay,” he said.

He added that financial inclusion empowers farmers to make better investment decisions, support their households and strengthen long-term productivity.
AMCOS representatives hailed the partnership, saying it would ease risks and improve day-to-day operations for their members. “Our farmers now have a system that not only protects their income but also integrates them into a modern, cashless economy,” said one official.
The initiative is expected to particularly benefit women and youth, who form a large share of the agricultural workforce. By adopting digital payments, these groups will also gain access to savings and transparent transactions that enhance trust with suppliers and buyers.
Officials emphasised that financial inclusion is key to unlocking opportunities in rural communities and sustaining Tanzania’s agricultural growth. The Airtel Money–AMCOS partnership, they said, is a significant step in ensuring that farmers are not left behind in the country’s digital transformation.
