Aircraft carrying Malawi Vice-President goes missing

MALAWI: THE Malawian Vice-President, Dr Saulos Chilima who was on-board Malawi Defence Force Aircraft is missing.

“All the efforts by the aviation authority to make contact with the aircraft since it went off the radar have failed,” Malawian Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba said in the statement.

The aircraft failed to make its scheduled landing at Mazuzu International Airport at 10:02 am, read the statement.

According to the statement, the military aircraft left Lilongwe at 09:17 am, carrying Dr Chilima and nine others.

The statement indicated that the Malawian Defence Force, General Valentino Phiri informed President Dr Lazarus Chakwera of the incident culminating him to cancel his trip to Bahamas.

The president also has ordered all regional and national agencies to conduct an immediate search and rescue operation to locate the aircraft.

The Vice-President Dr Chilima was born on February 12, 1973 and married to Mary Chilima and together they have two children.

Dr Chilima was first sworn in as Vice-President of the Republic of Malawi on 30 May 2014 and on 28th June 2020, he was ascended for the second term for the position.
