AI IN JOURNALISM: TZ Charts new course

ARUSHA: PRIME Minister Kassim Majaliwa said yesterday that the government is developing a specific policy for Artificial Intelligence (AI) with process currently underway, to provide guidance on its usage in the media.

He said the move aims to ensuring that the technology aligns with the principles of media freedom, transparency and journalistic integrity.

The Premier also urged journalists in the country to utilise AI as an effective tool in enhancing their work efficiently rather than as a hindrance to their Press freedom.

Mr Majaliwa unveiled the government plan during the observance of World Press Freedom Day, which is being nationally held in Arusha.

World Press Freedom Day is being observed on May 3 of every year with this year’s celebration focusing on the profound influence of AI on journalism and media under the theme, “Reporting in the Brave New World – The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Press Freedom and the Media.”

“It is an undeniable fact that AI can be a significant assistance for journalists, but it can also present major challenges if not used wisely. This requires an open discussion, strong policies and close collaboration across all sectors,” said Mr Majaliwa.

He said that in today’s world, media encounters new challenges arising from technological advancements, where AI plays a substantial role in the production and distribution of news.

The Premiers said the government recognises and values the significant contribution of the media to national development, that through the media, it has been able to inform the public about government activities and plans, while also encouraging public participation in development initiatives.

Mr Majaliwa asserted that the government and leaders acknowledge and appreciate the vital role of journalists and media outlets in informing society, promoting accountability and strengthening democracy in the country.

The Premier encouraged media and journalists to continue maintaining professionalism, ethics and patriotism in their work for the wider interest of the public and future of the country as well as the world at large.

Moreover, Mr Majaliwa stressed that the media has been crucial in providing education to the public on a range of issues, including production, entrepreneurship and social development.

He added that the media is instrumental in promoting and preserving peace, unity and national cohesion, while also contributing significantly to enhancing Tanzania’s image on the international stage.

On his part the Minister for Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Prof Palamagamba Kabudi said AI should not diminish the capabilities of journalists but should instead be used effectively in enhancing their work.

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Information, Culture, Arts and Sports, Gerson Msigwa, extended gratitude to journalists and commended them for their continued efforts in advocating for peace and hope among the public.
