AG stresses legal reforms to drive Vision 2050

DAR ES SALAAM: ATTORNEY General Hamza Johari has chaired the ninth meeting of the Government Legal Team in Dar es Salaam, focusing on strategic analysis of legal matters, including the provision of legal services, prosecution processes and delivery of legal decisions.

Opening the session yesterday, Mr Johari said the meeting was convened to deliberate on a strategic legal review that aligns legal services, prosecution and decision-making with broader national interests.

He underscored the importance of continuously strengthening the legal sector to keep pace with the implementation of the National Development Vision 2050, which embraces unity, human dignity, democracy, human rights, natural resource protection and the preservation of national culture and values.

“For the National Development Vision 2050 to be effectively realised, laws must be enacted and amended to align with the national goal of transforming Tanzania into an upper-middleincome economy,” Mr Johari said.

The Attorney General also called on participants to provide practical insights and recommendations that would enable the legal sector to make a meaningful contribution to national development and ensure successful implementation of the vision.

The meeting brought together representatives from the Ministry of Constitutional and Legal Affairs and several key legal institutions.

These include the Office of the Attorney General, the Attorney General’s Chambers of Zanzibar, the Chief Parliamentary Draftsman, the Solicitor General’s Office, the National Prosecution Service, the Law Reform Commission, the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA), the Judiciary, and the Tanzania Prosecutors and State Attorneys Association (TPBA).

In July, during the launch of Vision 2050, President Samia Suluhu Hassan directed the Law Reform Commission, in collaboration with the Attorney General’s Office, to begin drafting legal reform proposals to support effective implementation of the national vision.

President Samia stressed that the execution of Vision 2050 requires a strong legal framework to anchor long-term development goals.

“I sincerely congratulate the drafters of this vision, but now let us go and implement it in action, not just in words,” she said, highlighting the need for collective effort at every stage of execution.
