ACT-Wazalendo party pledges unity, progress

ZANZIBAR: ACT-WAZALENDO presidential candidate for Zanzibar, Mr Othman Masoud Othman, has pledged to strengthen collaboration with all partners in the Government of National Unity (GNU) if elected in the forthcoming General Election scheduled for next week.

Addressing hundreds of party members and supporters at Garagara grounds in Mwera Constituency, Mr Othman said his top priority will be to build a united, just and progressive Zanzibar that benefits all citizens regardless of their political affiliation or faith.

He said that his administration will promote genuine partnership not unity in name only but also ensuring that every Zanzibari sees tangible results and feels proud to be part of the nation’s collective progress.

Mr Othman said the growing enthusiasm and energy witnessed at ACT Wazalendo rallies reflect the party’s rising popularity among Zanzibaris, largely due to its practical and people-centred policies that address the daily needs of ordinary citizens.

“It is not normal to see such huge turnouts of people voluntarily attending our rallies… “Zanzibaris are tired of empty promises; they now demand real change,” he said.

He further vowed that, once in office, his administration will review all key contracts, particularly in public institutions and critical sectors facing allegations of corruption and abuse of power.

Mr Othman cited the Zanzibar Electricity Corporation (ZECO) as among the institutions to undergo thorough scrutiny, noting that there are serious concerns over the investor selection process, which he said suggests possible corruption and favouritism.

He also mentioned the Zanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA) as another entity facing major irregularities in its tendering process, claiming that legal procedures were not properly followed in awarding the current contract.

Othman stated that his government will transparently review all contracts to ensure justice is served, and anyone found guilty of corruption or misconduct will face strict legal action.

He further promised to review contracts in the health sector, noting that some public hospitals are operating under poor agreements thus resulting in inadequate services and shortages of essential supplies.

His broader goal, he said, is to establish a government built on accountability, integrity and transparency, one that restores public confidence in state institutions and ensures that all sectors serve the interests of the people.

He pledged that under his leadership, no Zanzibari will go to bed hungry. His administration will establish a strong and inclusive economic system enabling people to work productively and earn decent incomes.

“We will create an enabling environment for trade, farming, fishing and investment,” he said.

“Every citizen will have the opportunity to improve their livelihood. A peaceful nation cannot progress without a strong people’s economy.” Othman also stressed the importance of strengthening the public service, describing civil servants as the backbone of national development.

He pledged that every public servant under his administration will be required to perform his duties with integrity, accountability and a strong commitment to quality service delivery, warning that his government will not tolerate laziness or corruption in any form.

The candidate further urged all Zanzibaris to exercise their right to vote peacefully, protect their ballots and safeguard Zanzibar against political division.
