AU pre-election mission in Z’bar ahead of polls

ZANZIBAR: ZANZIBAR Minister of State in the President’s Office, Mr Ali Suleiman Ameir, on Wednesday welcomed a high-level African Union (AU) delegation in the Isles for a Pre-Election Assessment Mission (PAM) ahead of the 2025 General Elections.
Led by Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka, former Deputy President of South Africa, the 17-member delegation includes election experts, diplomats and AU institutional representatives.
According to a press statement released by the ministry, the mission aims to evaluate Zanzibar’s political environment and institutional readiness, ensuring adherence to democratic principles as outlined in the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.

Minister Ameir reaffirmed Zanzibar’s commitment to free, fair and peaceful elections and expressed appreciation for AU support in promoting democratic governance.
Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka commended the positive steps Zanzibar has taken, noting constructive engagements with stakeholders and encouraging progress in fostering an inclusive and credible electoral environment.
The AU team will later present recommendations to support the broader electoral process in both Zanzibar and the United Republic of Tanzania ahead of the October 2025 polls.
