Sabasaba grounds set for major upgrade

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) has embarked on a transformative initiative to redevelop the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Grounds into a state-of-theart, internationally recognised exhibition and commercial hub.

This ambitious project seeks to reposition the grounds as Africa’s premier destination for trade fairs, business exhibitions and investment forums and creating a dynamic, year-round platform for commerce and development. TanTrade Director General, Ms Latifa Khamis said they plan to develop the fairground into a modern exhibition centre of international standards transforming it into a business exhibition and commercial hub for Africa.

“This venue will attract not only business people but also business tourists, investors and global development stakeholders,” Ms Khamis told journalists on Monday.

The proposed upgrade includes construction of advanced hotels and other supporting infrastructure capable of hosting large-scale exhibitions and international conferences.

“This strategic addition aims to ease the burden of long commutes for exhibitors, reduce logistical costs and significantly improve the overall experience for both exhibitors and visitors,” she said.

A modern commercial centre will also be developed on-site, featuring office spaces, retail stores and business facilities to support enterprises of all sizes and a designated recreational area for children.

She said the project will be implemented under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model and operations at the new facility are expected to begin in 2027.

Currently, the grounds are known for hosting the Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), popularly referred to as ‘Sabasaba’, which attracts thousands of participants from across the globe.

Ms Khamis added that the transformation will allow the venue to host a wide range of national and international events, including trade exhibitions, business forums, seminars and conferences.

Once completed, the project is expected to generate thousands of jobs, increase tax revenue, boost the construction and service sectors and promote entrepreneurship.

According to Ms Khamis this strategic development is set to redefine the commercial landscape of Dar es Salaam and establish Tanzania as a key hub for business and investment across the African continent.
