StanChart collects 100 bags of waste as it cleans beach

DAR ES SALAAM: STANDARD Chartered Bank Tanzania marked World Environment Day (WED) with a beach cleanup at Rungwe Beach, along Kunduchi area, in Dar es Salaam, collecting nearly 100 bags of waste in a demonstration of its environmental commitment.
More than 70 bank employees and their families took part in the clean-up drive, which was conducted in partnership with the environmental organisation ‘Nipe Fagio.’ The drive led to the removal of close to one tonne of waste, primarily plastic and other non-biodegradable materials that pose significant risks to coastal and marine ecosystems along the Indian Ocean.
Standard Chartered Tanzania’s Head of Corporate Affairs, Brand and Marketing, Ms Desderia Mwegelo, said the activity was not merely symbolic, but reflected the bank’s sustained commitment to protecting the environment.
“This is not just a oneday event, it is a clear demonstration of our long-term dedication to sustainability and community engagement,” she said.

She added that while collecting nearly 100 bags of waste was a commendable achievement, it also serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need for collective action in addressing environmental challenges.
StanChart Tanzania has been actively involved in promoting environmental sustainability through various initiatives, including investing in green infrastructure, increasing the use of renewable energy in its operations and raising awareness about climate change among its employees.
Ms Mwegelo said the bank’s engagement with organisations like ‘Nipe Fagio’ underscores its ongoing efforts to support both a resilient economy and a healthier, safer environment for current and future generations.
