WiNTz seeks Tanzanian women’s participation in nuclear science

DAR ES SALAAM: DESPITE significant advancements in nuclear science and technology, women’s participation in the field remains low, primarily due to challenges such as the limited number of girls pursuing science subjects, societal perceptions, and a lack of role models.

This was stated today in Dar es Salaam by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Professor Carolyne Nombo, during the official launch of the Women in Nuclear Tanzania (WiNTz) association, which aims to increase the involvement of women in the nuclear sector across the country.

Prof. Nombo noted that this challenge is global, but its impact is more severe in developing countries like Tanzania, where many women lack opportunities and motivation to engage in this critical scientific domain.

She emphasized that the establishment of WiNTz is part of Tanzania’s broader efforts to support the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in empowering women in the nuclear sector and promoting gender equality in science and technology.

According to Prof. Nombo, WiNTz will be overseen by the Tanzania Atomic Energy Commission (TAEC) under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology. She described WiNTz not just as an association but as a platform for empowerment, inclusion, and excellence, designed to enable women to share knowledge, support one another, and drive positive change.

Through advocacy, mentorship, and collaboration, the association aims to provide women with professional opportunities in the nuclear field, enhance their skills, and promote both social and academic progress.

Prof. Nombo concluded by stating that the launch of WiNTz represents a new hope for advancing nuclear technology in Tanzania and expanding opportunities for women in this vital sector.
