PUMA Energy to launch four CNG stations

DAR ES SALAAM: PUMA Energy Tanzania is set to launch four Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations in Dar es Salaam and Morogoro within the next three months, including a high-capacity mother station, signalling a major boost to the country’s clean energy infrastructure.
According to CNG Project and Operations Manager, Eng Chagaka Kalimbia, this initiative marks a strategic move to reduce reliance on imported fuels, lower emissions and support Tanzania’s transition to more sustainable energy sources, aligning with national goals for energy security and environmental sustainability.
“This project represents a significant leap in Tanzania’s shift toward cleaner, more sustainable energy,” he said.
The new CNG stations will be located along Bagamoyo Road, Mandela Road and within the Alliance One Tobacco Factory in Morogoro. The high-capacity mother station will be established in the Independent Power Tanzania Ltd (IPTL) area, Tegeta in Dar es Salaam.
According to Eng Kalimbia, the Bagamoyo Road station will have a capacity of 1 Million Standard Cubic Feet per Day (1 MMScfd) and will be Tanzania’s first integrated multi-fuel station, offering petrol, diesel, LPG, lubricants and CNG. This sets a new benchmark for future-ready energy retailing in the country.
“The Mandela road station will also have a capacity of 1 MMScfd and is designed to serve a wide range of vehicles, including light-duty vehicles, three-wheelers, heavy-duty trucks and CNG-powered buses,” Eng Kalimbia explained, adding that it will also feature two truck conversion bays for retrofitting diesel trucks to CNG.

He further noted that the Tegeta CNG Mother Station will be the largest of its kind in Africa with an installed capacity of 6.7 MMScfd. Scheduled for completion in November this year, the facility will serve heavy-duty trucks, CNG buses and tube trailer filling operations.
It will also include two conversion bays dedicated to dieselto-CNG retrofitting. The fourth station, located at the Alliance One Tobacco factory in Morogoro, will operate as a daughter station, supplied via virtual pipeline from the Tegeta Mother Station.
This station is targeted primarily at industrial applications, including boilers, generators and forklifts. Eng Kalimbia added that a second phase of expansion is currently under technical and commercial evaluation.
“Phase two will focus on establishing additional CNG stations in the Coast region to support coastal logistics and industrial clusters, as well as in the Morogoro region to serve industrial and fleet users. Plans also include a potential daughter station in Dodoma which would be supplied via the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) from the Tegeta mother station,” said Eng Kalimbia.
Recently, Puma Energy Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Mark Russell stated that the company has already invested over 24 million US dollars in constructing three vehicle CNG filling stations, underlining the company’s commitment to energy diversification and sustainability.
Puma Energy Tanzania Managing Director, Ms Fatma Abdallah said the company had recorded strong operational performance and outlined major projects currently underway, including construction of CNG stations. Ms Abdallah noted that the company’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) business had expanded from Dar es Salaam and Coast into Dodoma, with further plans to enter Mwanza and Arusha before year-end.
PUMA Energy remains a key player in Tanzania’s fuel retail sector, offering a wide range of products and services, including LPG and commercial energy solutions.
