Twiga Stars step up preparations for DR Congo matches

DAR ES SALAAM: THE national women’s national team, Twiga Stars, are ramping up preparations for two vital friendlies against the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), for crucial fixtures on their path to the 2024 Africa Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The double-header clash will see both fixtures hosted at the Azam Complex in Chamazi, Dar es Salaam, with the first match kicking off on Friday, May 30 and the return leg scheduled for June 3.

The matches are seen as a critical test of Twiga Stars’ current form and an opportunity to fine-tune strategies, assess tactical discipline and build up match fitness ahead of the prestigious continental tournament.

Speaking during a training session at the Tanzania Football Federation (TFF) Technical Centre in Kigamboni, Head Coach Bakari Shime expressed optimism about the team’s progress and outlined the significance of the upcoming encounters.

“These two games aren’t just about results—they’re about understanding our strengths and identifying areas where we need to improve,” Shime said.

“We’re trying out different tactical formations and player combinations to see how the team responds under pressure. This will help us shape a cohesive and competitive squad for WAFCON.”

Shime emphasised the importance of boosting morale and nurturing young talent, especially players earning their first caps at the senior international level.

“Our technical focus includes building confidence and resilience, particularly among the younger players. These friendlies provide a great platform for them to step up,” he added.

One of the team’s rising stars, Elizabeth Chenge, shared her excitement and confidence ahead of the fixtures.

“We’re working hard in training, and the energy in camp is very positive,” she said.

“Everyone is committed and we’re aligned with the coach’s vision. These matches are a big step forward in our WAFCON preparations.”

Chenge, who is set to make her senior debut, also spoke of the personal significance of the matches. “It’s an honour to be part of the Twiga Stars squad.

If I get the chance to play and showcase my abilities, it will be a major milestone in my career,” she noted.

Meanwhile, the national men’s football team,Taifa Stars, is set to face off against South Africa’s formidable Bafana Bafana in an exciting international friendly match.

This FIFAsanctioned encounter is scheduled for June 6 and will take place in the vibrant city of Polokwane, South Africa.
