Simba cash in 2.8bn/- despite title loss

ZANZIBAR: SIMBA may have lost the title, but they still secured a substantial financial reward for reaching the final.

The club earned a lucrative sum of 1 million US dollars (approximately 2.69bn/-) in prize money, while the champions, RS Berkane, walked away with 2 million US dollars (around 5.39bn/-).

It was unfortunate for Simba, as they had been promised a cash prize of 100,000 US dollars (roughly 269.3m/-) by the President of Zanzibar, Hussein Ali Mwinyi, had they won the title.

The pledge was made just a day before the final, during a meeting with the team, club officials, and the technical bench.

Nevertheless, Simba still benefited from President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s goal-based rewards. For the final, she pledged 30m/- for each goal scored. With Simba scoring once, they received 30m/-.

In the semi-finals, the reward was increased to 20m/- per goal. Simba scored one goal, earning 20m/-.

During the quarterfinals, the President had promised 10m/- per goal and with two goals scored, the team received 20m/-.

Additionally, in the group stage, each goal was rewarded with 5m/-. Simba scored eight goals in that round, securing 40m/-.

By the time the final kicked off yesterday, Simba had already amassed a total of 80m/- from President Samia’s pledges: 40m/- from the group stage, 20m/- from the quarter-finals and 20m/- from the semi-finals.

The goal scored in the final added another 30m/-, bringing the total amount received from her goal-based incentives to 110m/-.
