It’s a new dawn for Tanzanian Professor Janabi

GENEVA: IT’S a new dawn for Tanzanian professor, Mohamed Janabi, after winning the position of World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Director for Africa.

Professor Janabi, the Executive Director of Muhimbili National Hospital, is a renowned cardiologist and health expert, before being officially announced as the new director of the WHO African region.

Professor Janabi defeated other contestants, mostly from Western Africa’s nations.

His opponents included  Dr. N’da Konan Michel Yao from Ivory Coast, who is a renowned researcher and academic. Dr. Yao has made significant contributions to public health, particularly in infectious disease research across Africa. His collaborations with the WHO and other global institutions have provided vital insights into disease dynamics and public health emergencies.

Also contested was Dr. Dramé Mohammed Lamine (Guinea): A seasoned public health expert with vast experience in disease prevention and healthcare system strengthening. Dr. Lamine has played a key role in advancing maternal and child health initiatives, particularly in West Africa, and in tackling diseases such as malaria and other infectious illnesses.

Also vied for the post was Dr. Boureima Hama Sambo (Niger) whose extensive experience in public health, Dr. Sambo has been instrumental in implementing health policies and programs in Niger. His work has focused on improving healthcare delivery and addressing public health challenges in the region.

There was also Professor  Mijiyawa Moustafa (Togo), who is a distinguished medical professional. Prof. Moustafa has contributed significantly to Togo’s healthcare system. His leadership has been crucial in advancing medical education and healthcare services in the country.
