Tanzania affirms close cooperation with India in defense, social sectors

DAR ES SALAAM: TANZANIAN Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, has affirmed the country’s commitment to continue strengthening its cooperation with India for the mutual benefit of both nations, particularly in the areas of defense and social services.
Dr. Mpango made the remarks today, April 14, 2025, during a meeting with India’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Sanjay Seth, at the State House in Dar es Salaam.
He said the partnership has been very fruitful, including mutual visits by officials from both countries’ defense ministries, military commanders, and joint military training programs.

He highlighted that the visit by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to India in October 2023 significantly enhanced the longstanding relations between the two countries.
He also expressed satisfaction with the existing collaboration in health, education, water, transport, and other public service sectors.
Dr. Mpango further praised the ongoing joint military exercise involving Tanzania, India, and other African partner countries, which includes naval forces and exhibitions of military equipment and technology. He emphasized that the partnership also extends to joint efforts in counter-terrorism training, anti-piracy operations, rescue missions, and coordinated patrols.

On his part, India’s Deputy Minister of Defence, Sanjay Seth, stated that Tanzania has remained a close and reliable partner to India across various socio-economic sectors, including trade, health, education, water, and investment.
He noted that Tanzania is currently India’s second-largest trading partner in Africa, with trade volume expected to reach 8bn US Dollars by the 2024/2025 fiscal year.
Sanjay also commended the government of Tanzania for approving the hosting of naval training exercises and defense equipment exhibitions, which feature participation from India and other African partner nations.
