Blue Economy Ministry, ZMBF partner to boost seaweed farming
ZANZIBAR: THE Zanzibar Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries has signed a partnership agreement with the Isles First Lady’s Maisha Bora Foundation (ZMBF) to enhance seaweed farming, with a focus on benefiting women and youths.
The agreement was signed on behalf of the Ministry of Blue Economy and Fisheries by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Captain Hamad Bakari Hamadi, while the Maisha Bora Foundation was represented by its Project Manager, Joseph Kaphipa, at the ceremony held in the ministry’s hall.
Speaking after the signing, Development and Coordination of the Blue Economy Department Director, Mondy Christopher Muhando, said, “This cooperation aims to improve the livelihoods of seaweed farmers, particularly women and youths, by strengthening the value chain and boosting their incomes.”
He stressed that the agreement reflects the ministry’s commitment to promoting sustainable seaweed production, especially by providing education to help young farmers adopt modern farming techniques.
“This partnership will undoubtedly create opportunities for farmers to earn a sustainable income from their activities, ultimately improving their lives,” he said.
He further explained that seaweed farmers need to cultivate climate-resilient varieties, enhance the value of their produce and expand market opportunities.

Mr Muhando also said that the ministry is focused on supporting farmers by providing them with highquality and modern seedlings that are suitable for the changing climatic conditions, “currently, many seaweed farmers, particularly women and youths, have been at the forefront of embracing this type of farming.”
The government has already engaged with companies that purchase seaweed to ensure better prices for farmers, allowing them to benefit from their produce.
“The government has made significant efforts in negotiating with companies to increase the price of seaweed and so far, progress has been positive,” he said.
On his part, ZMBF Project Manager Mr Joseph Kaphipa, said that the collaboration aims to enhance economic inclusion within key areas of the blue economy and the communities involved.
“The agreement will empower rural women and youths by enhancing their production capacity and improving their skills in seaweed farming,” he explained.
Additionally, he said that the partnership will also facilitate training programmes and technical support to address the challenges faced by women and youths in Zanzibar within the value chain of seaweed farming
