Bunge recognises Barrick for CSR, Local Content compliance
MARA: THE Parliamentary Standing Committee on Budget has hailed Barrick’s North Mara Mine for its commitment to responsible mining, highlighting its role in sustainable development and local community support through compliance with key regulations.
Committee Vice-Chairman, Mr Josephat Kandege, praised Barrick for its adherence to Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Local Content Regulations, urging other companies to follow its example.
“In terms of CSR and local content, this mine excels in its collaboration with the community, resulting in positive outcomes for those living around it,” he stated.
Its compliance is reflected in community development projects, including water, health, education and infrastructure, through CSR initiatives benefiting communities around the mine in Tarime District, Mara Region.
Vice-Chairman Mr Josephat Kandege highlighted the mine’s positive impact on local communities, particularly through clean and safe water projects in 11 villages around the mine, revitalising hope for residents in Tarime District.
“We are pleased with Barrick’s efforts to provide clean and safe water in four villages,” Kandege said.
He also commended the high number of Tanzanian employees, particularly at the managerial level, noting that local content was being successfully implemented.
Mr Kandege emphasised the importance of the mine’s contribution to the country’s economy, stating, “Let’s plan to meet in Dodoma to discuss challenges related to tax and laws that affect mining sector investors, aiming for appropriate reforms.”
Barrick North Mara, General Manager, Mr Apolinary Lyambiko, announced a 1.5bn/- investment in a welldrilling project in Kewanja Village as part of efforts to address water scarcity in the region.
He also highlighted that 96 per cent of the mine’s employees are Tanzanians and that the mine’s operations have been extended to 2040, offering continued employment opportunities.
Additionally, the mine contributes over 7bn/- annually to community development, including taxes and royalties to surrounding villages.
Musoma Urban MP, Vedastus Mathayo, praised the mine’s substantial contributions, while Special Seats MP, Stella Ikupa Alex, commended Barrick’s success and numerous awards, including the best employer accolade.
Meatu MP, Leah Komanya, acknowledged the mine’s 1bn/-, investment in the Genkuru Health Centre and its environmental conservation efforts.
Ole MP, Juma Hamad Omar, also applauded the mine for prioritising education in its CSR initiatives, underscoring the company’s significant positive impact on local communities.
