Campaign launched to revitalise East Africa’s blue economy

NAIROBI: ASCENDING Africa has unveiled a campaign aimed at restoring and strengthening East Africa’s blue economy.

Dubbed ‘Kilindini Campaign’, it aims to promote sustainable maritime resource management, support coastal communities and combat illegal activities threatening the South West Indian Ocean.

Derived from the Swahili word for “deep” or “in the depths,” Kilindini reflects the region’s rich maritime heritage, deeply embedded in tradition, trade and economic activity.

Speaking at the launch in Nairobi recently, Kilindini Campaign spokesperson, Mr Tendai Mtana, underscored the importance of urgent action.

East Africa’s blue economy has untapped potential to drive economic growth, improve livelihoods and preserve marine biodiversity.

Through this initiative, we aim to restore balance, empower local communities and ensure the long-term health of the ocean that sustains us all, Mr Mtana said.

The campaign seeks to address the pressing challenges that threaten the sustainability of the Indian Ocean’s resources.

Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing costs the South West Indian Ocean region over 415 million US dollars annually, depleting fish stocks vital to local communities.

IUUF also fuels criminal activities such as human trafficking and smuggling, heightening maritime security risks. Overfishing and climate change are pushing fish populations to dangerously low levels, threatening food security and livelihoods.

Immediate action is needed to restore sustainability.

Pollution, coral bleaching and habitat loss are destabilising marine ecosystems. Protecting mangroves, coral reefs and seagrass beds is crucial to maintaining biodiversity.

The South West Indian Ocean, a major global shipping route, faces increasing threats of piracy, illegal trafficking and unregulated fishing, jeopardising regional and international economic interests.

To combat these challenges, the Kilindini Campaign is implementing a comprehensive strategy focused on enforcing fishing quotas, seasonal bans and conservation initiatives to rebuild fish populations and protect fishermen’s livelihoods.

The initiative also seeks to provide education and training to help coastal residents lead sustainable fishing and conservation efforts. Strengthening cooperation between East African nations will be essential in addressing shared maritime challenges effectively.

The future of East Africa’s blue economy is not just a regional concern—it is a global priority.

He urged governments, organisations and individuals to take action by investing in technology, supporting community-led conservation efforts and advocating for stronger maritime policies.

Strengthening East Africa’s blue economy will improve the lives of millions and protect one of the world’s most important marine ecosystems, he said.
