Police, TCRA nab five fake NSSF workers

DAR ES SALAAM: THE Police, in collaboration with the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA), have arrested Baruani Hamis, also known as Majani, a resident of Kagera, and four others for using the internet to defraud retirees.

The suspects are accused of posing as pension fund employees and offering to help retirees secure their arrears.

The Dar es Salaam Special Zone’s Police Commander, Jumanne Muliro told reporters that tools used by the suspects to deceive people, including over 20 smartphones, computers, and SIM card registration machines, have all been seized.

Some of the suspects have already been brought at the Kisutu court for legal proceedings.

The Police have promised to continue providing the public with crucial updates regarding the legal actions being taken against these criminals. They are also continuing to investigate the broader network of abuse and fraud to combat such actions.

The Police have urged citizens to follow the guidelines issued by the Communications Authority and the Police and advised the public to avoid sharing personal information, such as CVs and NIDA numbers, with individuals they don’t know to avoid falling victim to online fraud.

Meanwhile, the Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone is holding Unique Adolf Ngagani and four others charged for owning TikTok accounts that have been used to spread abusive content by utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) systems.

The Special Zone’s commander, Muliro, told the press that the suspects have been thoroughly interrogated and some of the equipment they used had been seized.

Commander Muliro added that legal action would be taken against them, and some of the suspects have already been brought to court.
